Beth: My Future of Gaming (and Animal Crossing)

Hi everyone! Sadly, today marks my last day on the blog and I'm very sorry to be leaving. I wanted to do something special with this post and look to the future, but before I start my discussion, I just wanted to say a little thank you.

Squishy has been my co-blogger here for over a year and I'm happy to say she's going to be continuing the blog after I leave. She's become a great friend and I'm sure will be one for years to come. Thank you for letting me blog here with you, Squishy!

And onto the discussion!

Will I be a Nintendo fan forever?
Honestly? No! As much as I adore Nintendo games and they will obviously be special to me for a long time in the future, I can see myself moving over to PC or even PS at some point. I reckon I'll still have a Nintendo console and collection of games on my shelf, but I don't think they'll be such a big part of my life forever.

Will I be a gamer forever?
I think so. Gaming has become a big hobby for me since I was little, and I can't imagine stopping anytime soon. Even if I move between platforms and companies, I can definitely see myself continuing to game.

What is my future in Nintendo/Gaming?
For now, I'm definitely going to be continuing playing on my Switch. My friend Chris recently gave me a copy of The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth, which I can't wait to start and I still have Breath of the Wild to complete. Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 will definitely continue to be favourites as well!

What about Animal Crossing?

I'm sure I'll consider buying the next Animal Crossing game, but my interest in the series is definitely dwindling. What about New Leaf? Well, I'll be continuing my (slow) journey with JVGS Jeff to make our Arrested Development themed town at www.arrestedtown.tumblr.com!

But Acorn? I would actually like to hack. My friend Naomi hacked my old town, but I would love to do it myself. The amount you can do with the game so easily and quickly fascinates me, and it'd definitely take the pressure off to play frequently.

So it's time for me to say farewell and thank you for reading. Not just this time, but all of my posts! If you want to keep up with me, you can find me over on Twitter or on my book blog!

Splatoon 2: My 3 Favourite Stages

It's been over a month since the release of Splatoon 2, and after my last post, I thought I could do something similar with Splatoon.

So now we're here to talk about my 3 favourite Splatoon multiplayer stages. I was going to go for 5, but at that point we'd be listing most of them :P

Longspine Urchin Outskirts Concert Hall 1.jpg

3. I like the idea of Starfish Mainstage and the number of ways to explore the map.

Splatoon Stage Moray Towers.png

2. I didn't know if I would like Moray Towers at first, but I actually love the layout now. There are so many ways to ink this map.

BarnacleSportsClub.jpg

3. Musselforge Fitness has been one of my favourite levels since the start of the game, and I still love it.

Thanks for reading! I'll be back on Sunday with, sadly, my last post.

Mario Kart 8: My 5 Favourite Races

Hello gamers! As it's my last week on the blog, I thought I'd go for a few different things. Today we're going to be having a quick discussion of my top 5 favourite courses in Mario Kart 8 for Nintendo Switch.

Since buying the game, I have played all 42 races non stop with one of my best friends. It was a fun afternoon, and it took about 2 1/2 hours non stop!

1. I love the long courses, and Big Blue is definitely one of my favourites! It's very fast paced with a lot of water flowing through, and I love it.

Image result for wild woods mario kart 8

2. Crossing Cup is definitely one of my favourite cups - and Wild Woods also reminds me of Animal Crossing.

3. I also couldn't not include the Animal Crossing race - I love the little touches in this one like the speed-boosting fruit and bells for money.

4. I couldn't include the Animal Crossing race and not the Hyrule one! Again, this one has some great touches, like the rupees.

5. Super Bell Subway surprised me - I actually really like it! The train does annoy me of course, but the race has a lot of variations that I love.

Thanks for reading! Which are your favourite tracks?

Beth: Splatoon 2 First Impressions

Today marks a week since the Splatoon 2 release, and I'm very happy to say my first impressions are good! I haven't played much story mode, but I'm already spending a lot of fun time online.

The first part of the game is this little announcement - made to look almost like a TV show. It shows the online battle, ranked battle and league battle stages before you enter the actual game. This is kind of cool and useful, but I wish you could skip it. Seeing it multiple times a day is a little...much, and I wish it was optional!

Before I even entered the game, I did some 'warming up' in a trial. I like that they included this before the game even started - it meant I could go straight into online mode without worry.

The center of Splatoon 2 is the Inkopolis Square, where you can travel to different sections of the square and shops. The shops include places to buy equipment, clothing, accessories and shoes. Other places lead you to online play, local play and even a single player story mode!

The single player story is kind of like a 3D platformer, and although I haven't played much yet, it looks cool.

At the moment, my favourite part of the game so far is online Turf Wars! I could play this for hours, and I already have :P I'm not sure if I'm going to enjoy the story mode even half as much, but Turf Wars is worth the whole game at the moment!

Thanks for reading! What do you think of the game so far?

Beth's Thoughts: Is the Nintendo Switch a Success?

The Nintendo Switch is the newest of Nintendo’s consoles and now we face an important question - Will it be a success or failure?

Nintendo has been a success since the 1980s, with some of their consoles, games and brands becoming a household name. The Gameboy, Nintendo DS and Wii have all become well-known over the years, and Nintendo has steadily developed their consoles with a good success rate.

With the rise of Playstation and Xbox, Nintendo has recently taken a backseat. Other consoles may have progressed quicker in certain ways (online modes and region free games) and Nintendo fell back when the Nintendo Wii U didn’t sell as well as it could have.

Let’s take the Wii U as an example of how Nintendo went wrong. The Wii U and Nintendo 3DS were released within a year of each other - but the sales figures are drastically different. At the time of publication (according to Wikipedia), the Nintendo 3DS has sold 66.12 million consoles, but the Wii U has only sold 13.56 million. To put these figures in perspective, the 3DS game Animal Crossing: New Leaf sold around 2 million more copies in the first 2 months than the Wii U (console) did in its first 2.

After the sales and disasters of the Wii U, Nintendo had to get back at the top of their game. In October 2016, almost 4 years after the release of the Wii U, Nintendo announced they would be releasing a new console in March 2017. The question remained - how would they produce a fully finished console and build up the hype in just 6 months? Would it be possible?

The answer is yes, they could. Maybe not everything would be fully polished, but overall the launch for the Nintendo NX - now revealed as the Switch - ran smoothly. Launch sales were strong, and the Switch sold more copies over the first 2 days than any Nintendo console has before.

Pre-release brought many discussions, articles and videos. Would the Nintendo Switch be more successful than the Wii U? Are Nintendo going to run out of pre-orders after the disaster of the Mini NES? What games will be released in the first year? The second year? Many questions surfaced - but only one topped them all. Would the Nintendo Switch bring Nintendo’s legacy back, or would it fail once again?

Speculation was rife. Estimates, thoughts and feelings were expressed - but in the end, no one knew what was going to happen. Yes, Nintendo hit it’s pre-order limit in many stores across the world, with some even taking too many pre-orders. But that wasn’t enough to truly know how the Nintendo Switch would turn out.

Overall, the launch went smoothly. Most people received their consoles on time and without hassle. Software and hardware problems did occur, but that was to be expected. They had no more problems than any other console would - and the most important thing is, it was selling.

Not only did the Nintendo Switch sell over the first days and weeks, but it continues to as the months roll on. It’s now the week of E3, one of the world’s biggest gaming conventions, and Japanese sales charts are showing the Nintendo Switch is the country’s biggest selling console of all time. The only downfall is, as expected, Nintendo are still having some stock issues. If it wasn’t for that, the Nintendo Switch would be selling even better.

Why? The answer may be simple. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has a 91% attach rate to the Switch, and for good reason. The game has received excellent reviews since launch, and some gamers are even arguing it is the best video game ever made. To put it simply, having a strong launch title is definitely helping sales.

Overall - is the Switch a success? Honestly, I think it’s a little early to say. Sales figures are strong and are definitely looking positive for the near future, but there are chances they could fall after the hype over The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild dies down. Yes, they have a great line-up - but will any of those games be good enough to hold onto the success of the Switch? We shall see.

Beth's Thoughts: Ever Oasis Demo

Image result for ever oasis

I was originally planning an E3 post for today, but I've had such a stressful couple of days (with added illness!) that I thought I'd do a quick post about the Ever Oasis demo.

Ever Oasis is a 3DS game scheduled for release on the 23rd of this month - and you can find out more about it here!

Uncover the mysteries hidden beneath the sands in Ever Oasis, an all-new take on the adventure RPG genre, only for Nintendo 3DS family systems. From legendary producer Koichi Ishii comes a one-of-a-kind adventure packed with real-time battles, environmental puzzles and dangerous dungeons!

Ever Oasis is a cartoon style RPG packe with battles and puzzles. There is a mixture of protagonists with different abilities and you can switch between them.

CI_3DS_EverOasis_GIF_Esna_Tethu_Meet_2.gif

The game focuses on many different things, including creating and managing your very own oasis. This means managing shops, travelling, solving puzzles, battling and helping out visitors that arrive every morning.

How did I find the game?
It was okay. I can see the appeal, but I just found it average. Yes, it's cute, and I like the cartoon feel. But for this type of game, I think I prefer real-life style graphics. That's probably just personal taste, but I just don't think the cartoon style suits a game like this as well as real-life style graphics (such as Breath of the Wild)) suit these type of games more.

I also felt like this was a little bit of a rip-off of other successful Nintendo games. Obviously, adventure RPGs will follow similar paths - but there were things that stood out.

One of these is the adventure/travel style and the way you come across random monsters around the map. It felt so much like Xenoblade! Not just that, but so did the fact you can swap between main characters and have different skills with each.

The puzzles and dungeons felt a bit Zelda-ish, and the graphics felt like a Mario or Animal Crossing game. Everything just felt like other games!

So yeah, I guess I enjoyed playing - but I also found it very influenced by other games. If you like the sound of it, maybe you'll like it, but I think I'm going to give this one a miss.

Beth's Thoughts: ARMS Testpunch

Hi guys! As you may know, this weekend marks the first ARMS global testpunch. Similar to the Splatoon testfire, this little demo is meant to give us a demo into the online features of the game.

ARMS Global Testpunch times

If you've missed the latest ones, don't worry! There will be more next weekend. I really wanted to blog about this one, because it does seem like a big part in the Nintendo Switch's life, but there doesn't seem like much to say.

ARMS is a fighting game meant to utilize the motion controls on the console. The idea is to KO (knock-out) your opponent.

So, did I play this weekend? Yes. For like 10 minutes, and 3 fights. As you may have already gathered, I'm just not interested in this one. So dis-interested that in fact, I'm not even very motivated to write this post.

I wanted to try out the testpunch to maybe improve my outlook on this game, but it failed. To me, it seems boring. Too easy, and too little. The maps seem small and you can't really 'explore' them as you're 1-1 fighting. I don't know enough about the characters to say much about them, but nothing really appealed to me.

As for controls, they seemed confusing. This game should be simple, but the controls took that away for me. I did the tutorial a couple of times, but I still couldn't get to grips with it at all.

Did I like anything about this? Actually, yes. I presume the type of match you join is random, and I ended up in this kind of volleyball type-thing at one point and I actually kind of enjoyed it. A little slow, and I still wouldn't pay this kind of money...but it was more enjoyable than just 1-1.

Overall? I don't know how such a boring, repetitive game can be so confusing at the same time. I might try this again next weekend, but it's still not appealing to me at the moment.

Beth: Puyo Puyo Tetris Demo Discussion

Hi guys! Today we're here to talk about Puyo Puyo Tetris! As you know, this has been recently released on Nintendo Switch, and I decided to give the free demo a go.

The Game
Puyo Puyo Tetris combines classic Tetris and the Japanese game Puyo Puyo. In 2014, the two games were merged by Sonic Team. Thus, Puyo Puyo Tetris was born!

I had a quick look at the tutorial, which briefly explains how to play. It seems like a pretty simple game though, so I soon moved to the main game.

I had a go at Puyo Puyo, choosing an opponent playing classic Tetris. It's an interesting idea that you can choose your opponent - and you can choose whether you're playing different games or the same!

Puyo Puyo is a simple puzzle that is a little different to Tetris - as the bubbles fall in pairs, you can rotate them as they fall. To earn points, you try to make groups of four. Once four meet, they disappear from the board.

Tetris, as I'm sure you all know, is also a puzzle. As the different shapes fall, you can rotate them. Once you create a full line of shapes, the line disappears.

For both games, the one who's shapes reach the top of the board first loses.

There are many different versions of the game - but only two are unlocked in the demo. The one I talked about above is 'Versus', and the one I'm about to discuss is 'Swap'.

Swap is exactly what it sounds like. The game swaps between Puyo Puyo and Tetris, about every 25-30 seconds.

If you're wondering, the game swaps for both you and your opponent.

My Thoughts

Overall, I had mixed feelings about Puyo Puyo Tetris. I've always loved Tetris, but I actually wasn't that keen on Puyo Puyo. It was pretty...simple, and it just felt like a free mobile game.

Another thing I'd like to mention is the controls. It's pretty natural to use the joystick on the Joycon to rotate the Puyo Puyo bubbles and the Tetris shapes, but it's way too responsive for my liking. Even just a tiny touch can move the Tetris shapes over further than you want. As Jeff pointed out to me, you could always use the arrow buttons on the left Joycon, but that doesn't solve the problem on multiplayer!

This game overall just seems quite simple. If it was maybe a small release at around £5, I can see the appeal. But a full, big release at £35 just isn't worth it. It's too easy, there's no story, and the 'perks' (characters and mix of Puyo Puyo and Tetris) just don't seem worth it.

Maybe it's different in the full game, but I am a big lover of online Tetris and I just don't see the appeal of a full game like this.

April 12th: Nintendo Direct UK Discussion & Overview

Hi guys! As I'm sure you know, Nintendo streamed a brand new Nintendo Direct last night. I'll talk a little about what happened in brief, and follow up with my opinion/thoughts.
http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/sonic/images/2/2a/Nintendo_3DS_logo.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20110502233018
Let's start with Nintendo 3DS announcements! Hey! PIKMIN: Pikmins first 2D platformer will come to Nintendo 3DS on July 28th, along with a new Pikmin Amiibo figure.
Ever Oasis:
Defend the worlds last Oasis with Water Spirit Esna, coming to 3DS on June 23rd.
Monster Hunters Stories: A brand new RPG in the Monster Hunters series, coming to 3DS this fall.
Yo Kai Watch 2: Don't miss the chance to get an Extravagant Crank-a-kai Set and a glitzy coin by using the code SP@RKL3S in game!

Fire Emblem Echos: Shadows of Valentia:
New free and paid DLC, offering new maps and dungeons (No release date yet).
Team Kirby Clash Deluxe:
A free to start game available on the 3DS eshop NOW!
Kirby's Blowout Blast: 25 plus stages of a brand new 3D Kirby world, available this summer exclusively to Nintendo eshop.
Kirby multiplayer/action game (untitled):
Available this winter and currently in development. Devlish Brain Training: Remember this DS classic? Well, it's coming back in a Devil form to 3DS on July 28th.
Super Smash Bros Amiibo:
6 new Amiibo figures completing the Super Smash family will be available on July 21st!
The Legend of Zelda Amiibo: 3 new Link Amiibo figures based on Link from past games will also be available on June 23rd!

My thoughts on Nintendo 3DS: I can't lie - it's a lot. In my opinion, it's time for the 3DS to be taking a back seat with the release of the Switch. But still, they're doing a great job with the amount they're releasing. They have a strong calendar for all types of fans, but I will say one thing. Why would I play a 3D Kirby game, when I could just play a 3D Mario game? Why would I play a 2D sidescroller when I could get Super Mario Bros for a fraction of the price? It's time for something fresh and interesting, not copies of games that were successful for different fandoms. The only games I'm interested in at the moment are Devlish Brain Training and Ever Oasis, but I'm not definite about purchasing them!

The game will also be compatible with old Splatoon Amiibo figures. The new Amiibo figures and full game will be released on July 21st!

My Nintendo Switch thoughts:

To me, ARMS is still not interesting. I can see how they're trying to keep it fresh, but it still looks like it could get boring pretty quickly. I just don't think it's worth the money.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is one I'm definitely getting. I wanted Mario Kart 8 for Wii U, but I never bought a Wii U and now I'm kind of glad I didn't. This will be my time to play, and I can't wait. I can see they've worked hard on this to change it and keep it interesting for new and old players of the series.

I was a long time player of the PC version of Minecraft, and my brother played since Beta. I loved the game, and I am tempted to purchase it for Switch and get back into it with some new friends. I'm not too bothered about the Super Mario Pack, though. Although I'm not interested in Sonic Forces, I loved Sonic Rush as a kid. If Sonic Mania is an okay price, I'd definitely be tempted to purchase it and delve back into the classic feel.

I have to say, the Monopoly game looks interesting. I think it'd be great to play as a family or with friends, as long as it's at a reasonable price.

Splatoon 2 still looks like a definite purchase for me. I really enjoyed the demo, and the new features shown in the direct just cement my decision to pre-order it.

Overall direct thoughts: As you can see, I'm not very interested in even half of this stuff. The games I listed for the Switch (apart from ARMS), are the only ones I'm even remotely interested in purchasing. I'm also a little disappointed they didn't mention the upcoming Rime, which looks like a possible game to add to my Switch collection.

I also noticed there was no mention of Super Mario Odyssey, which could be a massive game for the Switch, if it's marketed right. This direct would have been a great opportunity for Nintendo to hype it up a little more. As a lot of fans have pointed out, E3 is just a couple of months away. In one way, I'm expecting a lot. In another, I can't imagine that at this point they'll have a lot to say.

They packed a lot into the Direct last night, and that could jeopardize the opportunity for them to make big announcements at E3. But you never know, maybe Nintendo have something surprising hidden, just waiting for an announcement opportunity. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

If you reached this sentence, well done! It's taken me at least 2 hours to get to this point in writing this post :P

What did you think of the direct?

Beth: Splatoon 2 Global Testfire

It's an exciting weekend on the Switch front - the Splatoon 2 Global Testfire is out!

Image result for splatoon 2 testfire

This is essentially a demo, but in a different form to usual. The testifre allows you to play against people all over the world for an hour at a time at six points over the weekend. If you haven't managed to play one yet, there's still 2 chances!

I've played two so far and I'm going to talk a bit about my experiences below. I'll also have a video up soon with my best moments from tomorrows testfire at noon GMT! Please bear in mind that I'm a first-time Splatoon player, and I've never played before this weekend.

There are two maps available in the testfire - and personally I think they're great! They're both nice, easy to explore maps of a perfect size. The Reef (shown above) is an outdoor city/town, with buildings around. Musselforge Fitness is obviously inspired by a gym/climbing centre aesthetic.

They're not too big that they're intimidating for new users, but I also haven't become bored with them yet. I do have to say these maps are pretty basic, but they're good for beginners and I'm guessing that's the precise reason Nintendo chose to use them for the testfire!

The controls were actually pretty easy to manage, although Jeff has said over in his thoughts that it's much harder for players of the original game!

The only thing I found difficult at first was the camera. You kind of have to move it up and down by moving the joy-cons themselves, and it can be a little hard to get used to at first. I found it okay as long as you keep the Joycon in the same place while you're playing, but it can make aiming a little tricky.

Other than that, the only other gripe I have is the Superjump feature. I tried to follow the instructions, but with not much luck!

The weapons were okay - but obviously I have nothing to base that on. These are the only weapons I've known so far, and honestly I'm not that keen on the original splattershot gun. It was just too simple for me!

I did like the other - new - weapons though. They were a little more advanced with interesting features. But after trying them all, I ended up going back to the splat roller. It's only a simple roller - but it ended up being the easiest to use for me. I also love the easy coverage and ability to be able to sneak up behind other players and crush them :P

The only gripe I have is how quickly every weapon runs out of ink. You can only cover a tiny distance before you have to refill. However, there is a good thing about refilling. While you're collecting ink, you have a little on-screen bar telling you how much ink you have and when you're completely full.

My overall thoughts are actually pretty good. I've only ever seen videos of Splatoon, so I was planning on buying Splatoon 2 in the summer based on that alone.

This testfire has definitely confirmed my intentions - and also confirmed that I'm going to be addicted to the full game :P

With new weapons and maps, this game is going to be just great. I can't wait until summer!

Beth: Nintendo Switch Presentation

Image result for nintendo switch
"Nintendo Switch is a brand new kind of home gaming system which offers a wide diversity of play styles"
Hi everyone! I'm sure we're all very excited after seeing the Switch presentation and maybe pre-ordering the console. FYI, I actually have just ordered the gray version from GAME!
I'm going to be looking at the Nintendo Switch in two parts. Today I'm going to take an in depth look at the hour long presentation in this post. Tomorrow, I'll be sharing more of my personal opinion over on Tea Pusheen. There's a lot to get through, so let's get started.

Image result for nintendo switch release
March 3rd 2017 is the date we're looking at, people! Gosh, that's so close.
Image result for nintendo switch price
The Switch RRP is $299.99 for US and £279 for the UK.

Online connection

An interesting thing I noticed is the ability for smart devices to connect to the Switch and be able to interact through it.
But a disappointing note is the paid online service beginning in fall 2017. I'm presuming that until then it'll be free, which will provide us with a 6 month (about) 'trial period'.

Nintendo Switch is not region locked

It's what we've all wanted - a region free console from Nintendo!

Modes

Nintendo Switch doesn't just offer one play mode, there's several!
  • Play games on TV in typical video gamestyle
  • Tabletop mode - stand up with kickstand and play with Joy Con detached from screen
  • Attach Joy Con for handheld mode
Image result for nintendo switch region free

Joy Con controllers

A big part of the Switch is the brand new Joy Con controllers. Let's look at some features of them:
  • To use the Switch in handheld mode, take the sSwitch out of the dock and slide in the Joy Con controllers either side of the screen.
  • The basic style when playing on TV mode (with the Switch in the dock) will be the Joy Con controllers attached to a Joy Con grip.
  • There will be left and right Joy Con's, each with analogue stick and button
  • Each Joy Con will also include the classic ABXY buttons, with an NFC reader/writer on each controller.
  • A new square button on the left controller will take screenshots with video capture planned for the future. The right equivalent will include a square home button.
  • There will be three colours for the Joy Con controllers - gray, blue and red.
  • L&R buttons are on the side of the controller, which is the top if you're holding it with two hands.
  • Two controllers will be available with each Switch
  • Straps will be attached to the Joy Con for your wrists. This is similar to Wii remotes.
  • Each Joy Con includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor which makes independent left and right motion control possible.
  • An infrared motion camera in the top of the Joy Con can sense the distance, shape and motion of nearby objects - including how far away a hand is and whether that hand is in the shape of rock, paper or scissors.
  • Joy Con can convey realism with HD rumble. This includes vibrations in the controller that are so detailed you can even feel how many ice cubes are in a glass.

Games

In the presentation we saw a number of different games. Let's take a look at some of them.
1 2 Switch - from what I can gather, this will be mini games using the Joy Con controller that can be completed without looking at the screen.

Arms - a fast-paced fighting sports game featuring extendable arms. Two Joy Con controllers per person will be needed to play this - with a split screen mode for the TV.
Splatoon 2 - will include new battle stages, weapons and moves. Joy Con and Pro controllers can be used on TV or handheld, with gyro controls if needed. Online and local battle will be available.
Super Mario Odyssey - new 3D open world Mario! The trailer showed many parts, including a city, forest, underwater, desert and a turnip world? Night and day.Cap character released for Switch.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - This new addition to the Legend of Zelda series has definitely been the most hyped for the console. Ever since the teaser trailer for the Switch, people have been obsessed. We've received teasers and photos, but now a full (very captivating, I must say) trailer and release date! As hoped, Breath of the Wild will be released alongside the Nintendo Switch on March 3rd.
Other new games include Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Fire Emblem Warriors, Dragon Quest 10 & 11 and Dragon Quest Hero's 1&2

3rd Party
Apparently, there are over 80 switch games currently in development. Some of the 3rd party companies partnering with the Switch are Square Enix, Atlus, Sega, Bethesda (Skyrim), Grasshopper and EA (FIFA).

Notes:

- Each Nintendo Switch will include a console, 2 Joy Con controllers (with wrist straps), a Joy Con grip, HDMI cable, a Nintendo Switch dock. The console is available with either gray or red/blue Joy Con controllers.
-Battery life will be 3 1/2 hours to 6 1/2 hours depending on game. Also, you will be able to play while charging with USB type C cable
-The Nintendo Switch will include local multiplayer and online play, but you will have to pay for online play after fall 2017
-I noticed in a trailer in the presentation that play featured Minecraft (and Storymode), Lego games, Farming Simulator and Sonic. At the end, we also saw other logos like NBA and FIFA.

Nintendo Switch Reveal

Hi everyone! Welcome to this random/discussion post, where we'll be talking about the brand new, not yet released Nintendo Switch!
As I'm sure most of you know, there have been rumors for months about the NX, and we were finally promised a trailer yesterday by Nintendo.

I managed to watch the trailer minutes after it went online, and wow I'm impressed! We'll start by watching the trailer, then analyzing the video and finishing off with my thoughts.

The analysis

The first thing noticeable about the Nintendo Switch is the home console feature. A small black console sits next to a TV. The game being played looks like Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which indicates it's release for the console.
As the video continues, it shows the controller for the home console being taken apart and made into a handheld screen with a circle pad and a few classic buttons from the DS. An obvious difference from earlier home consoles is the lack of a flip-screen - so far the Switch handheld version looks more like the PlayStation Portable.
A cartridge is shown being placed into the Switch here, which could allow for backwards compatibility with the Wii U and DS/3DS. Handy stands are presented flipping out of the back of the Switch, and the controls are then removed from around the screen.
So, simply, the screen will be able to stand alone while you use it's detachable controls to play. In the video, our 'character' arrives home and places the screen/handheld back into the home console, which kind of acts like a dock. I may be wrong, but I'm getting the impression this is how it could be charged.
He then uses a classic-style controller to play, which is different to any of the standard Wii (U) controllers we've seen yet. In fact, it appears to be similar to the Wii U Pro controller. One thing I noticed was the assortment of controllers and ways to play. As far as I can tell, the two sides of the screen controller are also available for multiplayer games, and can allow two people to play (kind of by splitting the controller in half).
But Nintendo aren't finished yet! They also reveal the ingenious idea of the screen being attached to the back of a car seat, allowing entertainment on long journeys.

The facts

  • IGN has confirmed Amiibo support for the Switch, in questioning with Nintendo.
  • Multiple controllers will be included with the console
  • Even though Skyrim is shown in the Switch trailer, Bethesda have not confirmed any specific titles - even though they are apparently happy to have 'the opportunity to collaborate with Nintendo.'

My thoughts

Honestly, I'm already loving the idea. I saw rumors months ago that it would be a home and handheld console combined, and I have to say it sounded like a dream.
Overall, I think this could be a great move on Nintendo's part. It's obvious they haven't had the best couple of years with sales, especially with the Wii U sales being so low. But the uniqueness and portability of the Switch are definitely appealing so far, and I truly believe if this is done right...it could bring Nintendo back.
NOTE: The Switch has an Amazon listing, and is available to set a notification for when it will be available to pre-order.

Thanks for reading. What are your thoughts on the NX?
